"Irish Folk at its very best from this four piece band, with
a beautiful and skilfully played blend of flute, uillean pipes/whistle,
fiddle/guitar and piano/sax/keys. "3(three)" is based
on traditional tunes from Ireland, mixed with a few contemporary
compositions from Irish and Italian composers,mainly in traditional
style. The tunes are a balanced mixture of fast and gentle quiet
tunes. The music gets its distinctiveness particularly from the
exciting use of piano and sax in traditional tunes. The music speaks
for itself, and there is no indication (other than the musicians'
names) that this band is not of Irish origin, but actually based
in Italy. Birkin Tree's high quality music is already reputed in
the Irish musicians' scene, and the band managed to convince two
great Irish singers,Niamh Parsons (with "Carrickfergus")
and Cyril o'Donoghue ("The foxy devil") to guest on this
recording for one song each. A discovery, well worth to check out
for all Irish music fans!"

Some beautiful Celtic music from Italy. Although primarily instrumental
(and the saxophone adds an unusual but oddly fitting sound), they
do bring in a couple of guest singers, including Niamh Parsons for
a gloriously luminous "Carrickfergus." Often stately rather
than wild, this is a disc of sheer beauty, with a feel that goes
beyond the notes to the heart of the tunes.
The presentation and production is reminiscent of ECM releases -
which is a strong, strong recommendation".

"Wenn im ligurischen Italien die Rollläden in die Mittagshitze
rasseln und die Siesta beginnt, begeben sich alle zu
Ruhe. Alle, bis auf vier widerspenstige Folk-Musiker, die das Land
der Iren mit der Seele suchen und finden. Daniele Caronne (Fiddle,
Gitarre), Devis Longo (Klavier, Saxophon), Fabio Rinaudo (Uilleánn
Pipes, Whistles) und Simone Sisani (Flöte) haben mit ihrem
zweiten bei Dunya veröffentlichten Album mit dem etwas umständlichen
Titel "3(three)" erneut bewiesen, dass guter Irish Folk
nicht nur bei Guinness und Regen gedeiht. Bereits vor vier Jahren
stellte der irischeGeiger Martin Hayes beim Erscheinen des Albums
"A Cheap Present" anerkennend fest, dass die Birkin-Tree-Interpretationen
dazu beitrügen, dass diese Musik auf höchstem Niveau auch
außerhalb Irlands überleben könne.
Mit schöner, aber fast überflüssiger Unterstützung
der drei Gastmusiker Niamh Parsons, Graham Dunne und Cyril O'Donoghue
ist "Birkin Tree" mit "3(three)" ein aufsehenerregendes
Irish-Folk-Album gelungen. Die vier Musiker beherrschen perfekt
und beseelt zugleich die irischen Verzierungstechniken (sogar auf
dem Klavier: "Miller's Maggot", Track 3) und arrangieren
ihre Sets aus traditionellen und selbst komponierten Tunes mit viel
Behutsamkeit und Phantasie.
Die unaufdringlichen Streicheleinheiten vom Savona-Quartett verleihen
dem mitunter jazzigen Ansatz obendrein eine klassische Note. Und
trotzdem bleibt alles wunderbar folky. Richtig richtig gut.

folk che con l’anima cercano e trovano il paese degli irlandesi.
Daniele Caronna (violino e chitarra), Denis Longo (Pianoforte e
Sax) Fabio Rinaudo (cornamusa e whistles) e Simone Sisani (flauto)
hanno mostrato ancora una volta - con il loro album dall’inusuale
titolo “3(three) – che la buona musica irlandese non nasce
solo bevendo Guiness o durante giornate piovose.
Già quattro anni fa il violinista irlandese musicista Martin
Hayes notò, in occasione della pubblicazione dell’album
“A cheap present” che le pubblicazioni dei Birkin Tree
sono responsabili della sopravvivenza della musica irlandese ad
alto livello al di fuori dell’Irlanda.
Con l’aiuto, bello ma superfluo, dei tre musicisti ospiti,
Niamh Pearsons, graham Dunne e Cyril O’Donoghue, i Birkin Tree
son riusciti a creare “3(Three)”, un albun che attira
l’attenzione.
I quattro musicisti sono perfetti nelle tecniche specifiche della
musica irlandese, ed utilizzano anche l’anima (persino nel
pianoforte: sentite la traccia 3, “Miller’s moggot”)
per mettere assieme, con fantasia e molto lavoro, le tracce tradizionali
mescolandole con le loro idee. Le carezze non invadenti che il quartetto
savonese propone nell’introduzione, sono frutto delle sonorità
jazz e di alcune note classiche. E, nonostante tutto, rimane comunque
una bellissima musica folk. Veramente, veramente buono."

De meest interessante lerse muziek wordt op die moment buiten het
groene einland zelf gemaakt. Neem nou een stel italianen dat zich
stort op de jigs, reels, airs en meer van dat bekende spul. Ik verzeker
je dat je oren vertroeteld zullen worden, je hartslang verdubbeld
tezamen met het adrenalinegehalte. Tenzij je alles bij het conserverende
oude will, bedenke deunen in beken stereotiep maatkostuum wenst
en louter blindvaart op het feest van herkenning. Birkin Tree blijft
weldegelijk bij de oude traditionele tunes, maar geeft daar een
eigenzinnige draai aan, laat er verfrissende arrangementen op los
zonder anarchistisch te zijn. In de tunes die nog het meest trouw
uitgevoerd worden druipt de klasse van de instrumentalisten er van
af. Simone Sisani is een voortreffelijk fluitist. Fabio Rinaudo
(ex Ciapa Rusa en Doppio Bordone) kann zich met gemak meten met
grootse lerse pipers op de aardkloot. Devis Longo (eveneens Ciapa
Rusa en Doppio Bordone) kennen we al als een uitgekiend keyboardspeler
en saxofonist. Hij zorgt voor de subtiele nuances en stuwende ritmes
op de piano. Wat Birkin Tree echt interessant maakt is de bijdrage
van gitarist/violist Daniele Caronna. Op "lerse" wijge
in open stemming begeleidt hij met ongebrukelijke en verassende
jazzy akkorden een voegt zo een meerwaarde toe aan het lerse ouvre.
Het verschil is duidelijik waarneembaar als hij viool speelt en
gastgitaristen zijn rol overnemen. Maar de arragenmenten van Birkin
Tree gaan verden dan allen dat. Luister bijvorbeeld naar The Lombard
wire piper set, waar voortdurend typische, eingenzinnige toevoegingen
in worden gewenen zoals een saxkoor in de afsluitende tunes Martin
Wynne's/Waterbed....
